Sealed Air Unveils Polyolefin Shrink Film Ideal for those hard to Package, Soft and Light Weight Products
:: 09 July, 2008
Sealed Air, the leading global supplier of packaging film and machinery, has just reformulated its soft polyolefin shrink film, which has been recognised worldwide for over 20 years.
The new Cryovac D-940 has benefited from new technologies, including 5-layer capability, improving all of the features and benefits of this well know film Having already made a very successful impact on the United States when it was launched, Sealed Air is now confident that the same will also happen in Europe.
The new D-940 is ideal for those hard to package, soft and light weight products such as printed and converted papers, magazines, snack foods, audio and video products as well as irregular shaped multi-packs.
Comprised of multi-layered, electronically cross-linked polyolefin the new D-940 has a low shrink temperature that reduces energy consumption.
It shrinks softly, easily and quickly, whilst also improving product presentation.
Designed to run at speeds of up to 90 packs per minute, with no distortion or buckling of the product, the easy to use D-940 can be run on a large range of manual, semi automatic and fully automatic shrink wrap equipment, even old packaging machines, and low power tunnels.
Customers are benefiting even further from the new D-940 improved seal, impact strength and tear resistance, which is providing greater protection during shipping and display.
Available in 15 and 19 microns, the new Cryovac D-940 is now also offered in 11 microns.
This latest thickness is aimed at cutting costs by using 25% less material than a 15 micron version, and thereby lessening the impact of waste on the environment.
Sealed Air shrink packaging European marketing director Helios Ruiz, commented: ''Major investments on resins development and equipment upgrades have been done to achieve new performances and reduce the cost impact of continuous raw material increase.
Sealed Air Cryovac D-940 has improved gloss and clarity which gives excellent pack appearance and the film remains tough, even stronger and above all cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
We kept the name of the film as it was very strong in the global market and we want to tell our customers and prospective customers that it is an improved formulation that will cover all the benefits of the old formulation and much more.
With this new formulation we will replace up to 4 products of our current range which will provide a lot of benefits to our distribution partners in terms of inventory turns and storage space.
We feel that by remaining innovative with our packaging solutions we have been able to develop a film to appeal to many sectors of the packaging sphere''.
About Sealed Air Corporation
Sealed Air Corporation is a company that makes a variety of packaging materials, systems and equipment. Its brands include Bubble Wrap, Cryovac, Instapak, Shanklin and Jiffy Mailer. They have recently moved headquarters to Elmwood Park, New Jersey.
The company was founded in 1960 by inventors Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes who developed AirCap cellular cushioning while they were trying to create textured wallpaper by capturing air between two thin layers of plastic. The wallpaper idea didn't work out, but they realized that their invention would make terrific protective packing material and their idea evolved into Bubble Wrap. The company acquired Instapak in 1976. The technology was applied to mailing envelopes, and the company then acquired Jiffy Packaging Corporation in 1987, Sentinel 1991, and the Cryovac Division of W. R. Grace and Company in 1998.
Founded in 1896, Jiffy was originally a company making excelsior (wood wool) products, but they branched out into padded shipping envelopes in the mid 1960s. These are made of a kraft (paper) outer, a paper inner, and shredded used newsprint padding. The name Jiffy is synonymous with the product, and, like Hoover, is used by some as a generic term. They were the first company to manufacture this type of product, and Sealed Air's use of the novel plastic bubble technology for packaging was largely inspired by the Jiffy product. Sealed Air acquired Jiffy in 1987, from the Manchester based Baldwin Family.
